Rescue

For nearly a year now, a feral cat and her 7 (also feral) offspring have been living outside our home in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn. It's heartbreaking to see them living on the street, but as they're skittish and distrustful of humans, none have ever seemed to be good candidates for rescue.

Recently, though, when the mama cat gave birth to a litter of 5 kittens right outside our door, we realized we might have the opportunity to save these little guys before it became too late. So at 4 weeks, just as she was getting ready to move the kittens from their temporary shuttle and introduce them to the rest of the family, we grabbed them and brought them inside. Sure, we felt a little bit guilty about taking the babies away from their mama, especially since she sat (and continues to sit) outside everyday just staring at the door. But ultimately, we felt it was more important to rescue the kittens and hopefully find them good homes so that they won't face the same kind of future as their mama and older siblings.

For now, we're happy to foster them. But it's certainly not easy taking care of 5 rambunctious little kitties and our goal is to get them (well, maybe 4 of them) adopted. They'll be 6 weeks on Sunday and are growing bigger and bigger, as well as more playful, by the day. Have a look below. Aren't they cute? You know you want to adopt 1!
